Six illegal immigrants arrested outside WalMart in Mission

Some six illegal immigrants are in custody after being arrested outside a Walmart store in Mission.

U.S. Border Patrol took the six immigrants into custody on Friday morning.

Investigators told Action 4 News that they were dropped off outside the Walmart in Mission.

Border Patrol agent Danny Tirada said agents at the McAllen station received a call at about 8 a.m. on Friday.

The caller said approximately 20 people had been dropped off at the parking lot of the Walmart.

When agents arrived, they were only able to find six of them.

All six were transported to a Border Patrol station and processed for deportation.

Their gender, ages and countries of origin were not available as of Saturday night.

Anaheim High School Cancels Events Found to Be Demeaning

“Seniores” and “Señoritas” events held at an Anaheim high school—in which students dressed as gang members and a pregnant woman pushing a baby stroller—have been canceled after officials concluded the activities were demeaning toward Latinos and their culture.

The events, which have been held for at least three years at Canyon High School, took place during senior activity week in June and were approved by campus administrators, according to school district officials.

The event was canceled after the Orange Unified School District launched an internal investigation in June in response to two complaints filed by former students.

“I conclude there was a lack of oversight/supervision and that the school administration should not have allowed this activity,” Aileen M. Sterling, executive director of secondary education for the district, wrote in an Aug. 10 letter summarizing her inquiry.

“Even if strict guidelines were provided,” Sterling said, “the result would still lead to hurtful and demeaning messages about the Mexican culture and to the students of the Mexican, Hispanic and Latino descent.”

In recent years, about 55% of the students at Canyon High were white and about 16% were Latino, according to a Times database of California schools. The faculty was 87% white and about 8% Latino.

Campus administrators will undergo diversity and sensitivity training, and the school will offer an ethnic studies class for students and hold an International Week activity in the 2012-13 school year, according to Sterling.

In the most recent event in June, two boys dressed as a gardener and the woman pushing the baby stroller. Other students dressed as U.S. Border Patrol agents and “gang members with bandannas and tear drops,” the investigation found. Some students wore large sombreros and fake mustaches.

More than a dozen illegal immigrants found at RV park in Donna

Donna police say that this case was quite rare.

Usually illegal immigrants are found hiding out in more rural or run-down areas, but not in areas as luxurious as the Victoria Palms RV Resort in Donna.

A phone call from management about a possible stash house led Donna police to the park on Monday afternoon.

By the time officers and Border Patrol agents arrived, neighbors saw over a dozen illegal immigrants jump the fence and flee into a nearby cornfield.

Though it seems stash house busts are on the rise in the valley, Lieutenant Rick Suarez says the Victoria Palms was the last place he thought as a pit stop for human smugglers.

“I’m very surprised to see that that’s where they’re storing them now. Normally they’d stash them in old beat up houses. In this particular case, I guess they were storing them there. But it got people’s attention,” admits the lieutenant.

Lt. Suarez then says police and border patrol officers rounded up twelve men and one woman.

They all admitted they’d been traveling to the united states all the way from el Salvador.

Management at the Victoria Palms chose not to comment about this case. They say they are still waiting for the investigation to finish.

Illegal immigration a problem

Having lived in Arizona for much of my life, I saw what happened when migrant workers flooded into the local economy. Wage earners in landscaping, carpet-laying, roofing, painting, construction and all other trades were undercut by migrants. Schools were forced to adapt, oftentimes poorly, to the influx of students with no or little English language skills.

Hospital emergency rooms became more crowded. Law enforcement had its hands full. Legal spats from activists were constant. The unique culture of the community changes.

I realize that there are folks who disagree, but I think it is a good thing that the Border Patrol checks citizenship. If we had a national identity card, or just a Social Security number, everyone stopped could be checked. Then profiling would not be an issue.

Also, a guest worker program might be a useful consideration. Spokane should decide what its position is regarding illegal immigration. Inaction has consequences.
