Australian Jews blast publisher’s attack on illegal immigrants, Muslims

A controversial article on illegal boat people by the publisher of the Australia’s main Jewish newspaper has ignited a storm of protest, with some critics savaging it for “vilifying Muslims” and promoting “xenophobic, Islamophobic and heartless sentiments.”

Titled “Curb your compassion,” Robert Magid’s article, published in last Friday’s Sydney and Melbourne editions of the Australian Jewish News, argued that illegal boat people are queue jumpers who deprive sanctuary to legitimate refugees.

“The Jews who fled the Holocaust fled certain death,” he wrote. “I doubt whether there is a single boat person in that position. Some may have fled a war zone or limited economic opportunities while others are seeking an easy life.”

Magid, a multi-millionaire property developer who bought the newspaper in 2007, also accused illegal immigrants with “destination shopping” and suggested – despite the “collective memory of Jews’ attempts to escape the Holocaust” – that Jews curb their compassion towards boat people.

He also linked asylum seekers to terrorism, suggesting that Muslim boat people could increase the risk of potential terror attacks.

“If Al-Qaeda or another jihad organization wished to create a network of terrorists in Australia, undocumented illegal immigration would ensure the Australian authorities had no way of verifying their bona fides,” he wrote.

The backlash to Magid’s article exploded in the blogosphere with the vast majority of comments agreeing with David Zyngier, who scolded Magid’s “anti-Jewish sentiments.” Zyngier, the son of an Auschwitz survivor who arrived here seeking asylum without papers in 1949, founded Jews for Refugees in 2002.

The article also triggered an open letter, initiated by the left-wing Australian Jewish Democratic Society on Monday, which accused Magid of engaging in “group vilification and dog whistle politics” against Muslims, and called for an apology “to all the victims of persecution who arrived by boat.”

An online petition accrued more than 375 signatories (as of Tuesday) along with a deluge of withering comments such as “anti-refugee sentiments have no place in my Jewish identity” and Magid used “fear, misinformation and biased language to vilify.”

The uproar was picked up by the mainstream media, with Crikey, an independent online news agency, publishing a report Tuesday under the headline “Jewish paper speaks ‘hate’ against Muslims, boat people” while Australia’s multicultural broadcaster, SBS, also aired a report on the fallout.

The refugee debate in Australia is a political hot potato and border protection is a polarizing issue, reignited in late June when about 100 boat people drowned after their boats sank off the Australian coast. Australia received 11,800 claims for asylum in 2011, according to the UN refugee agency, compared with 441,000 claims across the globe. More than 50 boats carrying more than 4,000 asylum seekers have been intercepted by Australian authorities this year, Reuters reported.

Jewish officials avoided entering the fray, with Danny Lamm, president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, simply saying: “The ECAJ stands by all aspects of its longstanding policy on refugees and asylum seekers.”

The council’s resolution supports the processing of asylum seekers “in a spirit of compassion” and urges all Australians to engage in dialogue “in a considered and respectful manner and without resorting to pejorative generalizations.”

One insider, who declined to be named, told Haaretz that Jewish leaders were reluctant to weigh in because of Magid’s position as publisher and because of the sensitivity of the subject matter.

But Arnold Zable, an award-winning author and refugee advocate who says he is alive today because his mother was a queue jumper, described Magid’s article as “one of the most ill-informed, factually inaccurate pieces on asylum seekers” he has ever read.

“Refugees and asylum seekers are only doing what we would do in their shoes, what Jews … have done for centuries,” he told Haaretz. “They are some of the most vulnerable, oppressed and traumatized peoples of our times.”
Mark Baker, director of the Australian Center for Jewish Civilization at Monash University in Melbourne, agreed. “Tens of millions of people have faced death by genocide and war in the years since the Holocaust, yet for Robert Magid people who risk their lives to escape crisis zones are deemed to be unworthy of our compassion,” he said.

“Our values and historical experience call on us to stand on the side of refugees. How often have we [Jews] escaped perils by pursuing illegal immigration routes in order to survive and start a new life?”

The Union for Progressive Judaism’s Religious Action & Advocacy Center lashed Magid’s generalizations. “We believe that efforts to lump together asylum seekers, refugees and terrorists and suggestions that label them all as deceitful and criminal are both sad and inaccurate,” it said in a statement.

But one blogger defended Magid’s argument, saying there must be a proper vetting process for refugees. “I’m not saying that every foreign national is a hate-filled religious fanatic, but they do exist (just look at the European Union). The vetting process exists precisely for that purpose, so that actual refugees get in.”

In a rebuttal to Magid, Melbourne’s Ralph Genende wrote on Galus Australis, an online Jewish magazine: “Unlike Robert Magid, I do not believe there are limits to compassion. I take pride in being part of a people who put people and compassion first.

“Australia, like Israel, is a society built on migration, and if you absorb your migrants with compassion and skill you build a stronger society both economically and ethically.”

Asked to respond to the torrent of criticism, Magid told Haaretz he stood by his article. “It’s not a question of who’s more compassionate,” he said. “The Jews who had the gas chambers behind them would have gone to any country. I feel a hell of a lot more sympathy for people starving in Darfur.

“These are the people who should have first priority not people who have the money and cunning to jump the queue.”

He said he believed “most Australians including most Jews would agree with me but don’t have the guts to come out and say it.”

Israel has the same problem, added Magid, who lived there for a period. “It’s resulting in a lot of racism in Israel. I think most Israelis would agree with me.”

The newspaper’s editor, Zeddy Lawrence, defended publishing Magid’s article, saying it was “just one viewpoint among many we publish, most of which actually tend to be a little more ‘compassionate’ than his.”

Lawrence said Magid’s article was in response to a piece published in the newspaper a fortnight ago by his brother, Rabbi Jeremy Lawrence of Sydney’s Great Synagogue, who wrote: “How can we be silent as lives are lost on immigration boats bound for Australia?

“It is surely incumbent upon us to acknowledge a humanitarian responsibility to offer safe passage and a haven to those who cannot wait,” Rabbi Lawrence wrote.

George Fink, a refugee from Vienna, said he was “desperately sad” that Magid had made such “an uncharacteristic and flawed attack” on refugees, since Magid himself was a refugee who was born in China and his (now deceased) parents – Ira, a Peace Now activist, and Isador, a member of the board of governors of the Jewish Agency – fled with the family from Shanghai to Melbourne.

Australia has absorbed some 740,000 refugees and humanitarian asylum seekers, including about 35,000 Jewish refugees from Nazi Europe, according to the Refugee Council of Australia.

Hitler’s Book “Mein Kampf”

Although it is thought of as having been ‘written’ by HitlerMein Kampf is not a book in the usual sense. Hitler never actually sat down and pecked at a typewriter or wrote longhand, but instead dictated it to Rudolf Hess while pacing around his prison cell in 1923-24 and later at an inn at Berchtesgaden.

Reading Mein Kampf is like listening to Hitler speak at length about his youth, early days in the Nazi Party, future plans for Germany, and ideas on politics and race.

The original title Hitler chose was “Four and a Half Years of Struggle against Lies, Stupidity and Cowardice.” His Nazi publisher knew better and shortened it to “Mein Kampf,” simply My Struggle, or My Battle.

In his book, Hitler divides humans into categories based on physical appearance, establishing higher and lower orders, or types of humans. At the top, according to Hitler, is the Germanic man with his fair skin, blond hair and blue eyes. Hitler refers to this type of person as an Aryan. He asserts that the Aryan is the supreme form of human, or master race.

And so it follows in Hitler’s thinking, if there is a supreme form of human, then there must be others less than supreme, the Untermenschenor racially inferior. Hitler assigns this position to Jews and the Slavic peoples, notably the Czechs, Poles, and Russians.

In Mein Kampf, Hitler states: “…it [Nazi philosophy] by no means believes in an equality of races, but along with their difference it recognizes their higher or lesser value and feels itself obligated to promote the victory of the better and stronger, and demand the subordination of the inferior and weaker in accordance with the eternal will that dominates this universe.”

Hitler then states the Aryan is also culturally superior.

“All the human culture, all the results of art, science, and technology that we see before us today, are almost exclusively the creative product of the Aryan…”

“Hence it is no accident that the first cultures arose in places where the Aryan, in his encounters with lower peoples, subjugated them and bent them to his will. They then became the first technical instrument in the service of a developing culture.”

Hitler goes on to say that subjugated peoples actually benefit by being conquered because they come in contact with and learn from the superior Aryans. However, he adds they benefit only as long as the Aryan remains the absolute master and doesn’t mingle or inter-marry with inferior conquered peoples.

But it is the Jews, Hitler says, who are engaged in a conspiracy to keep this master race from assuming its rightful position as rulers of the world, by tainting its racial and cultural purity and even inventing forms of government in which the Aryan comes to believe in equality and fails to recognize his racial superiority.

“The mightiest counterpart to the Aryan is represented by the Jew.”

Hitler describes the struggle for world domination as an ongoing racial, cultural, and political battle between Aryans and Jews. He outlines his thoughts in detail, accusing the Jews of conducting an international conspiracy to control world finances, controlling the press, inventing liberal democracy as well as Marxism, promoting prostitution and vice, and using culture to spread disharmony.

Throughout Mein Kampf, Hitler refers to Jews as parasites, liars, dirty, crafty, sly, wily, clever, without any true culture, a sponger, a middleman, a maggot, eternal blood suckers, repulsive, unscrupulous, monsters, foreign, menace, bloodthirsty, avaricious, the destroyer of Aryan humanity, and the mortal enemy of Aryan humanity…

“…for the higher he climbs, the more alluring his old goal that was once promised him rises from the veil of the past, and with feverish avidity his keenest minds see the dream of world domination tangibly approaching.”

This conspiracy idea and the notion of ‘competition’ for world domination between Jews and Aryans would become widespread beliefs in Nazi Germany and would even be taught to school children.

This, combined with Hitler’s racial attitude toward the Jews, would be shared to varying degrees by millions of Germans and people from occupied countries, so that they either remained silent or actively participated in the Nazi effort to exterminate the entire Jewish population of Europe.

Mein Kampf also provides an explanation for the military conquests later attempted by Hitler and the Germans. Hitler states that since the Aryans are the master race, they are entitled simply by that fact to acquire more land for themselves. This Lebensraum, or living space, will be acquired by force, Hitler says, and includes the lands to the east of Germany, namely Russia. That land would be used to cultivate food and to provide room for the expanding Aryan population at the expense of the Slavic peoples, who were to be removed, eliminated, or enslaved.

But in order to achieve this, Hitler states, Germany must first defeat its old enemy France, to avenge the German defeat of World War I and to secure the western border. Hitler bitterly recalls the end of the First World War, saying the German Army was denied its chance for victory on the battlefield by political treachery at home. In the second volume of Mein Kampf he attaches most of the blame to Jewish conspirators in a highly menacing and ever more threatening tone.

When Mein Kampf was first released in 1925 it sold poorly. People had been hoping for a juicy autobiography or a behind-the-scenes story of the Beer Hall Putsch. What they got were hundreds of pages of long, hard to follow sentences and wandering paragraphs composed by a self-educated man.

However, after Hitler became Chancellor of Germany, millions of copies were sold. It was considered proper to own a copy and to give one to newlyweds, high school graduates, or to celebrate any similar occasion. But few Germans ever read it cover to cover. Although it made him rich, Hitler would later express regret that he produced Mein Kampf, considering the extent of its revelations.

Those revelations concerning the nature of his character and his blueprint for Germany’s future served as a warning to the world. A warning that was mostly ignored.

@Sweden Twitter Account Runs Aground with Controversial Tweet on Jews

If all publicity is good publicity, then the @Sweden Twitter account is admirably succeeding at bringing attention to the Nordic country, and helping to promote tourism to it, just as it was set up to do.

The @Sweden Twitter account, created and overseen by the Swedish Institute and VisitSweden, is unique in that a different Swedish citizen is given the reins of the account each week to make posts about Sweden and their lives as they see fit. In previous weeks, the tweets have been handled by a female priest, an 18 year old living with his parents, and a lesbian truck driver, among others.

This week it was 27 year old blogger Sonja Abrahamsson’s turn, who stated in her CuratorsofSweden.com bio that she would “tweet about my thoughts and being me, about having children and living my life and what not”.

Apparently that ‘what not’ included making questionable tweets about Jews, as she’s kicked off a firestorm of controversy through some of her recent tweets.

In one tweet, she mused “Whats the fuzz with jews. You can’t even see if a person is a Jew, unless you see their penises, and even if you do, you can’t be sure!?”

She followed that up by tweeting “In nazi German they even had to sew stars on their sleeves. If they didn’t, they could never now who was a jew and who was not a jew.”

The tweets were quickly denounced by Twitter users inside and outside of Sweden, and even drew the attention of U.S comedian Stephen Colbert, who requested that his many rabid fans convince those overseeing the @Sweden account to put him in charge of it for a week, and that he “knew what the fuzz about Jews was.”

Despite the controversy and backlash, VisitSweden’s marketing director, Maria Ziv, said the tweets would not be removed, as they were not deemed to be racist. Likewise, Sergio Guimaraes, media relations manager for the Swedish Institute came to Sonja’s defense and the defense of the Twitter account, stating that freedom of speech is a core value of Swedish society, and that is reflected in how the account is run.

For her part, Sonja later tweeted an apology in response to the backlash, tweeting that “Im sorry if some of you find the question offensive. Thats was not my purpose. I just don’t get why some people hates jews so much.”

Deadly racist plot featured in exciting new novel

What if a biological weapon could be altered into a “smart germ” in the same way that bombs have been turned into “smart bombs”? What if germs could be altered to attack only people with a certain genetic code (i.e., blacks, Arabs, Jews or Caucasians)?

Author Dean Malchik deals with this harrowing possibility in his exciting new novel “The Sins of the Fathers,” now available on Amazon.com for the low introductory price of $2.99.

In the novel, a white supremacist organization discovers a disgruntled scientist who has succeeded in producing a biological weapon that attacks only blacks. If the group can acquire that weapon, it intends to murder hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of blacks and blame it on the government.

Only one man stands in the way.

A young reporter has infiltrated the group and intends to bring it to its knees. However, as the young reporter gets closer to exposing the group’s deadly plot, the group also gets closer to discovering his true identity.

Meanwhile, the clock quickly ticks toward “the day of destruction.” Will this lone reporter be able to prevent the devastation and the loss of potentially millions of lives? Or will the world have to face the consequences?

“The Sins of the Fathers” is a novel that Malchik feels he alone was destined to write.

“It brings together so many things that I personally care about,” he says. “I’ve long been concerned about racism and discrimination, and even though I’ve now completed three novels, this one is the most personal for me.”

Unfortunately, like many authors today, Malchik might have never reached an audience if it were not for e-publishing.

“I’ve always felt compelled to write novels,” says Malchik, who is now in his 40s. “Unfortunately, after I finish them, I have no interest in the business of striving to get them published. I know it doesn’t make sense to do all of that work and then just leave the books in my desk drawer, but that’s what I have been doing up until now. E-publishing with Amazon has made it possible for me to easily get my books out to readers, and that is a great thing.”

Although e-publishing is a relatively new model, some authors are finding great success with it. Author Amanda Hocking, one of the stars of e-book self-publishing, started out publishing her books on Amazon.com and in other e-publishing venues. As her popularity with readers grew, she was offered a very lucrative book contract by St. Martin’s Press.

“It’s encouraging,” Malchik says. “It puts publishing more in the author’s control where it should be. We spend all of this time coming up with our themes, characters and plots and investing months and sometimes years into completing our books. We should benefit more from our work than a publishing company should.”

Malchik’s two other published novels are “American Jihad” and “Unacceptable Risk.”

Excruciating details emerge on Jewish ghettos

NEW YORK – Even after decades of Holocaust writings, excruciating details are only now emerging about more than 1,100 German-run ghettos in Eastern Europe where Nazis murdered hundreds of thousands of Jews.

The latest volume of the “Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, 1933-1945″ is part of a long-term effort to document every site of organized Nazi persecution. It’s sponsored by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.

Holocaust scholar Lawrence Langer says this information “would slip into historical oblivion and be forgotten forever if we didn’t have this volume.”

For one, he says. most people don’t know there were more than 1,000 ghettos – or that more Jews died during World War II in Poland and the western Soviet Union than the estimated 1 million gassed in Auschwitz.
