Students threaten teacher on Facebook

A group of Year 12s at a northern suburbs high school posted on Facebook that a female teacher should be raped and murdered, prompting Education Department director-general Sharyn O’Neill to warn students and parents to show respect for teachers.

Six students were suspended from Ballajura Community College for writing the derogatory and sexually suggestive comments about the teacher online.

The department confirmed that some of the remarks referred to rape and murder.

Ballajura acting principal Cheryl Townsend said the comments appeared on three private Facebook profiles two weeks ago.

“This type of online abuse is absolutely unacceptable,” she said.

“As soon as this was brought to our attention, we acted quickly to discipline the students and meet their parents.”

Ms Townsend said the school and community had offered support to the teacher, who had decided not to report the matter to police.

The students, who expressed regret for their actions, were suspended for between one and five days depending on the nature of what they wrote.

They were also banned from taking part in a river cruise, a Year 12 fun day and from attending the final Year 12 assembly.

Ms O’Neill said she supported the school’s strong stance.

“We expect better behaviour and more respect from our students towards teachers and school staff,” she said.

“This sends a clear message to students and parents everywhere that you cannot hide behind faceless Facebook and you must show respect to teachers.”

Education Minister Peter Collier said Commonwealth laws allowed Federal and State police to investigate online threats.

“The bullying of school students and staff by any means is simply unacceptable,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the advent of social media such as Facebook has provided bullies with an additional vehicle for intimidation.

“As with any form of bullying, this will not be tolerated in our schools.”

Shadow education minister Paul Papalia said online abuse was a serious issue and he was not convinced that suspending individual students would send a strong enough message.

He said Labor was proposing a new State law to deal with cyber bullying.

WA Secondary School Executives Association president Rob Nairn said students often made inappropriate remarks on social media without thinking through the consequences.

He said highly abusive comments should not be tolerated

“I don’t believe these types of comments would be suitable for anybody, whether they are a teacher or anyone else,” Mr Nairn said.

WA Primary Principals Association president Stephen Breen said the notion of respect had dwindled in society in recent years, which had filtered into schools.

“In primary schools, we spend a lot of our time and resources on the development of the social skills of children,” he said.

‘Zombies’ interrupt anti-gay protest by Westboro Baptist Church

A protest by the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church was cut short after nearly 300 peopledressed as zombies and drowned out the church members.

After announcing plans to protest at a DuPont, Washington military base, the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church found themselves being the ones protested against. Led by 27-year-old Melissa Neace, the ‘zombies’ outnumbered the church members nearly 300 to eight. Neace started a Facebook pagetitled: “Zombie’ing Westboro Baptist Church AWAY from Fort Lewis!,” which created enough attention to get people to attend the protest. Neace was happy with the turnout and just wanted to take attention away from the anti-gay Christian church.

“We wanted to turn something negative around, into something people could laugh at and poke fun at…It was the easiest way to divert attention from something so hateful.”

The Westboro Baptist Church is one of the most vocal anti-gay Christian churches in the country, and while not the only one, they are the best known and most extreme. The Westboro Baptist Church was founded by former lawyer, Fred Phelps. Phelps attempted numerous times to run for office in Kansas as a Democrat, but never even won a primary election. Phelps backed Al Gore for president in 1988, but as Gore and other Democrats started to embrace LGBT rights, Phelps began to demonize the Democratic party. Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church claim that President Obama is the “Antichrist” who will form an Unholy Trinity with Satan and the Pope.

Though many Christian churches hold anti-gay views, very few are as vocal as the Westboro Baptist Church. As the Westboro Baptist Church continues to use their First Amendment right to protest, it seems as if many others, ‘zombies’ or not, are going to be doing the same thing.

Over 4,000 illegals arrested in three months

Muscat: Royal Oman Police (ROP) arrested as many as 4,134 infiltrators of various nationalities in the various governorates of the Sultanate during the first quarter of this year, Lt.

Colonel Abdul Karim bin Murad Al Balushi, Director of Infiltration Combating at the General Directorate of Operations, has said.

These operations were carried out in cooperation with the military and other security units.

During the same period, 4,518 infiltrators were deported -” in coordination with the relevant embassies in the Sultanate -” through official channels to verify the identities of infiltrators. These people were working in violation of the labour laws of the country.

The director of anti-infiltration operations said that most infiltrators come from East Asian countries and some Arab countries bordering the Sultanate. The infiltrators resort to illegal immigration from their countries to the Sultanate in search of work or to earn money or pass through Oman‘s territory on their way to other neighbouring countries.

Al Balushi pointed out that these infiltrators pose a threat to the security and economy of the country.

He said the ROP had arrested many of these infiltrators on the charges of theft, drug trafficking and other crimes.

The ROP has urged people to cooperate with the legal authorities to combat this menace by promptly reporting such cases to the police, either by calling the emergency phone 9999 or by reporting the matter to the nearest police station.

Pakistan temporarily blocks Twitter over cartoons

- Pakistan‘s government blocked access to social networking service Twitter for most of Sunday, after publicly holding Twitter responsible for promoting what it described as a blasphemous cartoon contest taking place on Facebook, officials said.

The restoration of Twitter service late in the evening was as sudden as its suspension earlier in the day. No official statement or explanation was given for an act that some rights campaigners saw as much a warning shot at the media and public expression as a reaction to controversial content.

The outages began late Saturday night, in a rolling ban that fully took hold in the early morning hours of Sunday, leading to huge public outcry on other social media.

A government spokesman was quoted by local news media early on Sunday as saying that the government had been in talks with Twitter to remove “objectionable” material but that there had been no results.

“The material was promoting a competition on Facebook to post images of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad,” said Mohammad Yaseen, chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication’s Authority, was quoted as saying. He was also quoted as saying that Facebook had agreed to allay the concerns of the Pakistani government.

It remained unclear whether San Francisco-based Twitter had agreed to the demands of the Pakistani government before access was restored, at roughly 10 p.m. Sunday.

Fizza Batool Gilani, the daughter of Prime

Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, announced on Twitter around then that Gilani had ordered the restoration.

Blasphemy is an issue that roils sentiment easily in Pakistan. Blasphemy allegations have often resulted in violent riots, and religious minorities in Pakistan have long maintained that the country’s blasphemy laws are used to settle personal scores.

“I never heard of any caricatures on Twitter,” said Arif Rafiq, an adjunct scholar at Middle East Institute and a commentator on Pakistani politics, who has a Twitter following of more than 10,000 users.

“Now this ban will be promoting s caricatures were posted on it.”
