Clyburn: GOP Letter Criticizing Rice Uses Racial ‘Code Words’

Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said Tuesday that a letter from nearly 100 House Republicans urging President Obama not to appoint Susan Rice as secretary of State employed racially charged “code words” to make its case.

The letter, signed by 97 House Republicans, says Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, “is widely viewed as having either willfully or incompetently misled the American public in the Benghazi matter”—language Clyburn saw as racially loaded.

“You know, these are code words,” Clyburn, the third-ranking Democrat in the House, told CNN. “We heard them during the campaign—during this recent campaign we heard Sen. Sununu calling our president lazy, incompetent, these kinds of terms that those of us, especially those of us who were grown and raised in the South, we would hear these little words and phrases all of our lives and we’d get insulted by them.

“Susan Rice is as competent as anybody you will find, and just to paste that word on her causes problems with people like [incoming Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman] Marcia Fudge and certainly causes a big problem with me,” he added.

In a press conference earlier this week, Rep. Fudge (D-Ohio) said she believed criticism of Rice contained “a clear … sexism and racism.”

“Susan Rice is an outstanding person, and to have her sullied like this really frustrates me to no end,” Clyburn said. “And I hate to see representatives from South Carolina, where her roots run deep, out in the forefront of this. It is just unseemly to me.”

The Moment Helpless Afghan Woman, 22, Is Gunned Down ‘Because Two Fighters Couldn’t Decide Who Could Have Her’

Gunned down with an AK47 as baying villagers cheer in delight, this is the shocking moment a burqa-clad woman was executed in Afghanistan for her part in a Taliban love triangle.

The 22-year-old woman, said to have been married to a member of a hardline Taliban militant group, was shot dead after being accused of adultery with a Taliban commander.

Horrific pictures show a crowd of bearded men gather to watch a rifle-wielding gunman shoot her in the head and back during the execution in Qimchok village, in Afghanistan’s Parwan province.

Amateur footage of the brutal killing shows the woman, known only as Najiba, slump to the floor, as dozens of men on a nearby hillside cheer, ‘God is great!’
The unidentified shooter, who is seen wearing an orange pakol (the traditional Afghan hat), swiftly executes her – but continues to shoot her dead body whilst walking towards it.

Officials in Afghanistan said the killing came about due to a dispute between two Taliban members, who had argued over the woman.

Parwan province governor Abdul Basir Salangi told CNN that as both Taliban men ‘had some kind of relationship with the woman’, they instead opted to accuse her of adultery to ‘save face’.

The harrowing images came from an undated video, although it is thought the Afghanistan execution took place some time in late June.

The video was handed over by a Qol villager to the Parwan provincial government, situated north of Kabul, their spokeswoman Roshna Khalid told AFP today.

It is understood that both Taliban commanders have subsequently been executed.

The video has been condemned by the Afghan government as un-Islamic and inhuman.

Public executions of alleged adulterers were common when the Taliban regime was in power.

They were in control of the country from 1996 until 2001, when they were ousted by a US-led invasion for harbouring Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden after the 9/11 attacks.

New Orleans police officer resigns after post on Trayvon Martin

A New Orleans police officer who posted an offensive comment online about slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin resigned on Tuesday.

Superintendent Ronal Serpas accepted his resignation.

“My responsibility to the people of New Orleans, as well as to the professional officers on this police force, demanded I take swift action in this matter. I have accepted Giroir’s resignation, and believe it is in the best interest of this department and this city,” Serpas said.

Under a news story on Martin, officer Jason Giroir wrote on the website of CNN affiliate WWL: “Act like a Thug Die like one!”

He admitted to the post and submitted his resignation after being told Serpas was calling for a pre-termination hearing, according to police.

The superintendent suspended Giroir without pay on Monday, when news of the incident broke.

“To say that I’m angry is an understatement. I’m furious,” Serpas said then.

Trayvon Martin, 17, was killed February 26 as he walked back to his father’s fiancee’s house in Sanford, Florida, after a trip to a convenience store. Police say he was unarmed, carrying a bag of Skittles candy and an iced tea. He was shot by George Zimmerman, who has told authorities he was acting in self defense.
